Vol. 1 No. 13, Week of May 23, 2011
This week: Brandon Flowers goes Gene Simmons, Nothing good ever comes of disobedience except international fame and glory, Gladys Knight on making a living in a casino, Neon Trees buy-in while Fictionist eschew corporate label, festival, and magazine, plus updates on the JaneDear girls, Maroon 5, and much (a little) more!
There was just one rule in the white bible that I didn’t keep. It had to do with beds. What did you get for breaking the mission rules? A concert t-shirt? A perfumed pen-pal? Because this guy got a career as an internationally famous dub-step DJ. DJ J-Paul, one half of HavocNdeeD, starting listening to dubstep while in Capetown, South Africa from 1999-2001. While he doesn’t explicitly say he discovered it as a missionary, how many LDS dudes from Utah do you know who spent two years overseas in their early 20s just for fun? In other words, if he did break the rules, this is probably the best break-the-rules mission story of all time.
Which one is going to be the cat? Are the Killers the KISS of this generation? Each member of the Killers will be performing some of their own solo material at an upcoming show. No word yet if Marvel Comics has contacted them to print their own book with trace amounts of band’s blood.
Maybe I’m wrong on this one, but for me, the beast doesn’t include selling out. The AV Club interviewed Tyler Glenn of the Neon Trees about their corporate connections recently. Their list: “Orange Crush, GetGlue, MTV2, Allen & Heath, Mountain Dew, Vitamin Water, Due Date.” Then they asked him what they do with all that money. (If AV club read the linescratching post, they would already know where some of it goes.)
BREAKING Neon Trees just won a 2011 Billboard Music Top Alternative Song award for their single “Animal.” Congrats!
US Magazine never buries a lede. Gladys Knight briefly addresses what it’s like to have her own show in Vegas as someone who has overcome a gambling problem. She also talks about recent charitable work with the Boys and Girls club, and her connection as a promoter of mass transit. The headline for the interview? Exclusive: Gladys Knight Applauds Mariah Carey’s Baby Names, of course. Thanks, US.
